The Poor band is where this recipe settles, some distance behind the Good reading a typical adult dry food manages. Protein and processing and nutritional balance both come back Poor, with transparency Average. The reasons behind the first two are structural: cereals occupy the top of the label, the meat is an unnamed meal, and moisture goes undeclared. For the right dog, an easy keeper with no sensitivities, none of that need matter in the bowl.

Wheat and wheatfeed open the list, and wheatfeed is the by-product left after milling, valued more for fibre than for nourishment. Between them and the maize, estimated carbohydrate reaches 57.6% of dry matter, well above the 46.2% typical for adult dry food.

Meat and bone meal at 20% supplies the protein, and it is the old-fashioned sort of entry: rendered, concentrated and deliberately unspecific about the animal inside. Protein finishes at 20.7% of dry matter with fat at 7.6%, modest numbers that suit a dog burning off less than it once did.

Chicken oil adds the animal fat and the palatability, while fish meal at 1.25% contributes a small marine note. The vitamins and trace minerals are the standard inorganic set, dosed in print, with selenium supplied as sodium selenite.

The label does not declare moisture, so our dry-matter arithmetic assumes the usual 8% for a kibble. Worth knowing, because every dry-matter percentage above rests on that assumption.
