Our Average band is where this food lands, with the typical adult dry food a step up in Good, so think of it as the near side of the middle. The label earns credit for naming its grains and dosing its additive panel; what holds it to the middle is a modest meat share and a starch-heavy analysis.

The grain block comes first and it is refreshingly specific: whole grain wheat, maize and barley with oats behind them, each named rather than folded into a vague cereals term. Named grains will not suit every dog, but they let you know precisely what you are feeding, which is more than many everyday foods manage.

Beef meal, pinned at a minimum of 14% beef, is the main animal ingredient. Meal is rendered and dried, so it is protein-dense for its weight. The finished kibble reads 22% protein as fed, or 23.9% of dry matter, on the gentle side and consistent with the food's easy-going brief.

Chicken fat carries the energy and chicken digest the flavour, with salmon oil bringing a measure of omega 3s. Beet pulp adds fibre, and dried peas, potatoes and carrots make up a minimum 4% vegetable share in a recipe that leans on starch to do the heavy lifting.

The tail brings yucca, blackcurrant and rosehip at unspecified levels. The pack's own additive panel declares a full vitamin and trace mineral line, from vitamin A through to iodine with every dose printed, and selenium in the standard sodium selenite form.
