Canagan
Canagan Small Breed Light / Senior review
Canagan Small Breed Light / Senior takes the brand's small breed chicken recipe and turns the dial down for dogs that need less from dinner. Chicken still supplies over half the label between its fresh and dried forms, fat is trimmed to 14%, and the joint supplements arrive at the heaviest doses in Canagan's small breed line. It sits in our Excellent band.
Our view
Likely to suit
Your small dog may be slowing down or filling out, but their dinner does not have to become dull to deal with it.
- Small breed dogs carrying extra padding, with fat trimmed to 14% and a recipe designed for lighter rations
- Older small dogs, since glucosamine and MSM are dosed at 1,440 mg/kg with chondroitin sulphate close behind
- Fish-avoiding dogs, since neither fish nor fish oil is named on this label
- Owners stepping a dog across from Canagan's standard small breed recipes, as the chicken base stays familiar
Worth watching
A few things are worth being honest about before you commit.
- Over half the recipe is chicken, worth knowing if chicken is the thing your dog reacts to
- The label does not declare moisture, so the dry matter figures here rest on the standard 8% assumption
- A light recipe lowers the load but does not abolish it, so the scales still matter at dinner time

The score, in context
An Excellent band finish is a strong result for a light recipe, a category that often trades its meat away to cut fat. The typical adult dry food sits a step back in our Good band. Here the chicken stays put and the trimming happens on the fat line instead.

Ingredient notes
Chicken works from both directions, 27% freshly prepared and 27% dried. Much of the fresh chicken is water, so the dried half is doing more here than its share suggests. The food keeps its protein while losing fat: 37.0% protein against 15.2% fat on a dry matter basis.
No grain appears on this label at all. The starch comes from sweet potato, potato and peas. On an assumed 8% moisture, estimated carbohydrate is 35.3% of dry matter. That sits below the 46.2% typical of adult dry food.
The joint trio is the headline act: glucosamine and MSM at 1,440 mg/kg apiece, with chondroitin sulphate dosed just behind them. Those are printed levels well beyond a token sprinkle, and they suit the older small dogs this recipe is aimed at.
Dried egg at 3% tops up protein quality, fructooligosaccharides and psyllium tend the digestion, and the closing herbs and fruits from apple to fenugreek season the recipe rather than define it.
Price and value
£7.42 a kilo, in 2kg and 6kg bags.
Reckon on roughly 239 grams and £1.77 a day for a 15kg adult in moderate condition, worked from about 840 kcal a day on the standard 110 × bodyweight^0.75 maintenance estimate. A small dog needs a fraction of that. The label's own table asks 50 grams a day at 3kg, rising to 130 grams at 10kg.
