An Excellent reading on our scale puts this bag a step clear of the typical adult dry food, which comes out at Good. Its case is simple: half the recipe is named chicken declared two ways, the carbohydrate estimate stays restrained, and the growth-relevant figures, calcium included, are printed where a large-breed owner can check them.

Ingredients, as declared: Freshly Prepared Free Range Chicken (26%), Dried Chicken (26%), Sweet Potato, Peas, Potato, Chicken Fat (4.2%), Alfalfa, Dried Egg (3%), Chicken Gravy (1.5%), Minerals, Salmon Oil (1.2%), Glucosamine (1,450 mg/kg), Apple, MSM (1,450 mg/kg), Carrot, Fructooligosaccharides, Spinach,Psyllium, Seaweed, Chondroitin Sulphate (1,060 mg/kg), Peppermint, Camomile, Marigold, Cranberry, Aniseed & Fenugreek.

The even 26% and 26% split between freshly prepared and dried chicken is the recipe's engine. Dried meat is fresh meat with the water already gone. Its position on the list understates how much of the finished kibble it accounts for, and the analysis shows it: protein converts to 37.0% of dry matter.

Sweet potato, peas and potato bind the kibble without grain, and the carbohydrate estimate lands at 33.6% of dry matter, comfortably below the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. Fat at 18.5% of dry matter puts energy at 391 kcal per 100g, sensible fuel for a big frame.

For a large breed the two lines that matter most are printed plainly. Calcium comes out at 1.52% of dry matter, a level that suits controlled skeletal growth. The joint stack is glucosamine and MSM at 1,450 mg/kg each, with chondroitin sulphate dosed in print beside them.

Dried egg at 3%, salmon oil at 1.2% and alfalfa fill out the working entries, with the salmon oil bringing marine omega 3s and, inevitably, a trace of fish. The herb tail, peppermint down to fenugreek, is there for flavour.
