Canagan Dental Dry Puppies/Adult review

72.1/100Excellent
DryPuppyAdult

Canagan Dental is a grain-free turkey recipe with one clear job on top of everyday feeding. It carries ProDen PlaqueOff, a seaweed supplement, at a printed 2,500 mg/kg to work on plaque and tartar from the inside. Freshly prepared turkey at 33% and dried chicken at 18.7% front the list, sweet potato and potato bind it, and a dosed joint trio rounds out the extras. The recipe covers puppies and adults of every size and sits in our Excellent band.

Our view

Likely to suit

If your dog's breath announces them before they reach the room, this is a food built with that problem in mind.

  • Dogs prone to plaque and tartar, with ProDen PlaqueOff dosed at a printed 2,500 mg/kg
  • Households raising a puppy alongside the adults, since one recipe is written for both life stages
  • Large breed puppies specifically, because calcium is declared at 1.3% of dry matter, a level that suits big-boned growth
  • Busy, active dogs, as the energy density rewards a dog that genuinely burns it off

Worth watching

Keep three small points in mind and you will know exactly what you are buying.

  • Behind the turkey, chicken turns up in the dried meat, in the fat and in the gravy, so a chicken-sensitive dog needs a different bag
  • Salmon oil at 1.2% puts a little fish in every bowl, worth knowing for a strict fish-avoiding household
  • The seaweed supplement works gradually through the saliva, so give teeth a few weeks to show the difference rather than a few days

The score, in context

This recipe lands in our Excellent band, one step up from the Good result the typical adult dry food records. Behind that reading: well over half the recipe is declared animal ingredients, and carbohydrate converts to an estimated 33.0% of dry matter against a typical 46.2%. The functional extras carry printed doses instead of marketing adjectives.

Ingredient notes

Freshly prepared turkey opens the list at 33%, and because fresh meat sheds its water during cooking, the dried chicken at 18.7% ends up supplying much of the finished protein. Between them the analysis reaches 33% protein as fed, or 35.9% of dry matter, with fat at 18% giving a dense 394 kcal per 100g.

Sweet potato, potato and peas do the binding with no grain anywhere in sight. Pea protein further down the list nudges the protein figure along. It is a plant top-up and not more meat, and here it does a supporting job only.

The headline act is ProDen PlaqueOff at 2,500 mg/kg, a supplement milled from a North Atlantic seaweed. Fed daily, it is absorbed and reaches the saliva, where it is intended to soften the mineral bonds that let tartar build on the tooth surface. It is one of the few dental additives you will see with a printed inclusion rate, which is exactly how a functional claim should be handled.

Joint support is dosed too: glucosamine and MSM at 850 mg/kg each and chondroitin sulphate at 620 mg/kg. Dried egg at 3.1% adds a complete protein, and alfalfa brings a little plant mineral content.

The tail of peppermint, camomile, marigold, cranberry, parsley, aniseed and fenugreek is seasoning at trace level. The peppermint and parsley suit the breath brief, but the recipe stands on its meat and its seaweed, not its herbs.

Price and value

£7.67 a kilo, available in 2kg, 6kg and 12kg bags.

Feeding a 15kg adult in moderate condition takes roughly 213 grams a day, about £1.64, if you assume the standard maintenance estimate of 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75). For that same dog the label's guide gives 150 grams. Start there and adjust to suit yours.
