Animonda Integra Protect Renal review

We don't put a score on this food. It is a veterinary diet, formulated for a diagnosed condition and meant to be fed on a vet's advice. Your vet has seen your dog and we have not, so a number from us could only pull you towards their advice or away from it, and neither of those is ours to do. What follows is what the label declares, what the analysis works out at, and where to buy it, with no judgement attached to any of it.

Animonda ranges this one under Integra Protect as its Renal diet, a rice-led kibble the maker builds around reduced protein and held-down mineral content for dogs with kidney disease.

What's on the label

Rice comes first and maize second, so two grains carry the bulk of the recipe before any meat appears. Dried poultry protein is third, with poultry fat and beef tallow directly behind it and beet pulp next.

Poultry is a group rather than a species, taking in chicken, turkey, duck and goose, while the tallow adds beef and the salmon oil adds fish. Dried whole egg, poultry liver and hydrolysed poultry protein are in there too, so several animals contribute even though the overall quantity of meat is deliberately kept down.

Protein is declared at 16.0%, which works out at 17.4% of dry matter, and crude ash at 4.5%, or 4.9% once the water is taken out. Those are small numbers to read on a bag of dog food, and pulling protein and mineral content down is the entire purpose of a kidney diet rather than a shortfall in the recipe.

The energy protein is not supplying comes from fat, printed at 20.0% and converting to 21.7% of dry matter. The carbohydrate estimate is 49.5% as fed and 53.8% of dry matter, and the pack reads 416 kcal per 100g. Calcium works out at 0.76% of dry matter, supplied as calcium carbonate, and potassium chloride is the other mineral called out by name.

Beet pulp and linseed cover the fibre, fructo-oligosaccharides are in for their prebiotic effect on gut bacteria, and brewer's yeast and Yucca schidigera finish the list. Vitamin A is declared at 15000 IU and vitamin D3 at 1200 IU, with zinc oxide at 60 mg and manganese oxide at 6 mg. Copper and iodine each carry a figure of their own.

Animonda's table starts at 40 to 75 grams a day for a 2 to 5kg dog. It gives 90 to 175 grams across 6 to 15kg and 215 to 290 grams across 20 to 30kg, then reaches 365 to 495 grams for dogs of 40 to 60kg. On a kidney diet your vet sets the portion and the review dates, not the panel on the bag.
