A tracker on the collar, or a collar that is the tracker?

Updated 20 September 2026

Both put a location on your phone. The difference is what your dog wears, and how much the kit tells you beyond where your dog is.

A clip-on is a small box that threads onto any collar or harness strap. A GPS dog collar is the collar itself, with the electronics built in, so your dog wears one piece of kit and nothing hangs off them.

Think about the day the collar comes off for a bath or a swim, and about how often you swap collars. A clip-on moves across in seconds, and a smart collar keeps everything in one place on your dog's neck.

Common questions

Will a clip-on tracker fit my dog's collar?

Nearly always. They thread onto a flat collar strap, and the makers sell a spare strap if yours is unusually wide. For a small dog, check the tracker's weight against the collar so it sits comfortably.

Do dog trackers need a subscription?

The GPS ones come with a plan, on both styles, because they use a mobile network to report their position. A Bluetooth tag runs with no subscription, and our comparison of the two sets out where each fits.

Can I use one dog tracker for two dogs?

A clip-on moves between dogs in seconds, and it reports on whichever dog is wearing it. Two dogs who both roam are happiest with one each, so each of them shows up on the map.

Will a dog tracker come off if my dog swims?

Check the maker's water rating and the fixing before a swim. These are built for weather and for wet dogs, and the strap or clip is what holds it in place, so fit it snugly on the collar.
