Car harness or booster seat?
Updated 16 September 2026
A car harness clips into the seat belt and holds a dog on the seat. A booster seat raises a small dog so it can see out, with a tether inside to keep it in place. Both keep your dog steady when you brake.
A dog car seat setup starts with the Highway Code, which asks for a dog to be suitably restrained. A car harness and a booster seat are both ways of doing that on a back seat, and the right one follows the size of your dog.
Crash testing is worth knowing about. A few makers test their restraints at certified facilities and say so, and where they do we name the maker alongside the claim, so you can weigh it yourself when you choose.

Kurgo
A car harness with steel nesting buckles, crash tested by Kurgo and ready for the walk too.

VavoPaw

IOKHEIRA
An adjustable seat belt tether that fits a belt buckle, an ISOFIX socket or a LATCH anchor.
IOKHEIRA suggest pairing it with a car harness, which is the right advice for any tether, because the load then sits across the chest.

Just Pet Zone
Headrest Seat Belt Tether, bungee

Ones we like

Kurgo

LE SURE
Waterproof Small Dog Booster Seat
A high sided booster seat for a small dog, front seat or back.
Clip the buckle to a harness so the load spreads across the chest, and use the side pockets for leads and treats.

HEGGCOOE
A raised, padded car seat for dogs up to about 16 kg.
The cover unzips for the machine, and a wipe down keeps the foam inside fresh between washes.

GoBuyer
A framed booster carrier basket that folds flat between journeys.
Built for pets up to about 7 kg, and the attached tether clips to a harness so the load sits across the chest.

Lealchum
A padded car seat bed wide enough for a medium dog or two small ones.

Common questions
Does the law require a dog car restraint?
The Highway Code says a dog must be suitably restrained so it cannot distract the driver or injure anyone if you stop quickly. A harness and seat belt, a crate, a pet carrier or a boot guard all count.
Can I clip a dog seat belt to a collar?
Clip it to a harness. The load then spreads across the chest, and it is the advice the tether makers give themselves. A car harness that doubles as a walking harness covers both ends of the journey.
Should my dog travel in a boot crate?
A crate or a guard in the boot suits a bigger dog well, as long as the crate is strapped in. On a back seat, a harness clipped to the seat belt is the everyday answer, and a small dog often settles in a booster.
