Long line or a retractable lead?
Updated 16 September 2026
Both give a dog more space than a two metre lead. A long line is the training tool, clipped to a harness and left to trail. A retractable gives a dog that already walks nicely room to sniff on a path.
A long line for dogs and a retractable lead both add distance, and they are doing different jobs. One is training kit that teaches a recall you can trust. The other is walking kit for a dog whose lead manners are already there.
Get the job right and both work well, and the same two habits apply to each. Clip either one to a harness, and keep the length short where there is traffic or where you are passing other dogs.

Common questions
Should a long line go on a harness?
Yes, a harness. With any long lead, a dog that reaches the end takes the force through whatever it is clipped to, and a harness spreads that across the chest. It keeps the neck out of it and makes the line comfortable to use for long sessions.
How long should a long line be?
Five metres is easy to manage in most places, and ten gives a more realistic recall distance for open ground. A line that shortens covers both, so you can run five metres on a path and let the full ten out in a field.
Tape or cord on a retractable lead?
Tape for most dogs, because it is easy to see and comfortable to hold. Cord suits a small dog and light use, where the thinner reel feels neat in the hand. Either way, lock it short around traffic.
Other comparisons
Whistle or your voice
A dog whistle sounds the same on every walk, which is why recall sticks with one, and your voice still wins at close range.
Double-ended or figure of eight
A double-ended dog training lead steers a puller towards you and a figure of eight gives head control, so pick the one your walk calls for.
