1080p, 2K or 4K?

Updated 20 September 2026

Resolution decides how much detail survives across a room and how quickly a memory card fills. For watching a dog at home, each of the three steps has a room size it suits.

The question behind a dog camera is simply how well you can tell what your dog is doing, and from how far away. Resolution, room size and light work together on that, which is why the best answer depends on your room.

Storage is the other half. A sharper picture writes more data, so a 4K camera works through a memory card faster than a 2K one. The larger card keeps the same few days of history.

Common questions

Is 1080p enough for a dog camera?

In a normal sized room, yes. It answers the question nearly everyone is asking, which is whether the dog is settled, and it keeps a long history on a single card. For a large open space or a dark coat at distance, 2K and 4K hold more detail.

Does a 4K dog camera fill a card faster?

Yes, a sharper picture writes more data, so buy the largest card your camera supports if you go 4K. That keeps a good run of history on the camera and gives you plenty of days to scroll back through.

Does a higher resolution camera help at night?

Night vision range matters more after dark, because the limit is usually how far the infrared reaches. Check the metres or feet a maker quotes alongside the resolution, and measure the distance from the camera to your dog's bed.

Are two dog cameras better than one sharp one?

Often, yes. Cover two rooms at 2K and you see the whole of your dog's day. One 4K camera does one room, which is why makers sell popular models in two packs.
